Excerpt from exhibition text by Louise Polan, Chief Curator:
Winslow Anderson's unique spirit and style infuse the hundreds of objects he designed since he began his career in 1946. Anderson brought to his designs creativity, ingenuity and a hands-on involvement in the process from beginning concept to finished product. His thirty-five year career for Blenko Glass Company (Milton, WV) and Lenox China and Crystal (Trenton, NJ) embodied all the principles of good design; his flowing organic and geometric shaped objects are functional and elegant, utilizing the materials, glass and clay, to their fullest potential. His designs for glassware and fine china also express the concerns of industry of marketable, affordable items.
Anderson poured all his energy into learning about glass…He soon leaned that glass, hot, molten and viscous, often revealed its special nature to the designer…He states "Just to see a piece being made was an inspiration, but the glass itself was the best designer. It did things in the process of being made, it revealed to me ideas. And the ideas were always good, because they came from the glass itself. It wasn't an idea that you would have to say, 'Can this be done?' The glass had already done it itself." |
